24-Year-Old British Soldier Dies In Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defence has announced the death of a solider from 1st Battalion The Rifles.

Lieutenant Daniel John Clack, 24, from north London, was killed on August 12 by an improvised explosive device while on a patrol in the Shaparak area of the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.

He was leading a ten-man patrol in the village of Dactran to speak to the local nationals and discuss a shura to take place the next day. Five other members of the patrol were also injured in the attack.

Lieutenant Clack's family issued a statement which said: "Dan was a brave Rifleman and he died doing the only profession he ever considered. He loved leading his Rifleman and was so proud to be an officer in the British Army.

"There are no words to describe our loss. He will be forever missed by his mother, father, brother, fiancée and all those who knew him. He will always be in our hearts."

The number of British service personnel who have died since operations began in Afghanistan in 2001 is now 379.
