Boy Stabbed In Coventry
Two men have been detained after a 14-year-old boy was left in a critical condition after being stabbed in the neck in Coventry. Police said the attack happened at about 5.40pm on Monday after the boy left the Lifestyle Express Store in Upper Spon Street, Earlsdon. A West Midlands Police spokesman said it was thought the boy was attacked by a man with a large carving knife. A 32-year-old Coventry man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm while a second man, aged 41, has also been arrested in connection with the offence. The boy has undergone emergency surgery and been transferred to a specialist hospital unit in Nottinghamshire.

A new free online service will help people to get improved access to jobs and career development opportunities. Lifelong Learning Accounts will empower adults to take more control over their learning by providing clear information and advice on skills, careers and financial support all in one place. Account holders will have free access to a number of online tools, including a skills diagnostic tool to identify their interests, strengths and needs, localised course and job searches a CV builder, an 'eligibility checker' to identify Government funding available to them and a facility to store all their personal learner information - CVs, skills tests, job and course searches - in one easily accessible place they can share with a careers adviser. Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, John Hayes said: "All young people and adults should have the chance to learn and to excel in their chosen skill, getting into work and progressing in their chosen career."

A £50 million Global Research and Technology Hub has been announced by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The Hub will connect UK researchers and businesses working to commercialise the Nobel Prize winning super strong material graphene. Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said: "One year ago scientists working in Manchester won the Nobel Prize for their discovery of graphene - the Global Hub will ensure we win the race to develop commercial uses for it as well. The Hub will keep world-beating research into graphene in this country. It brings researchers and the companies seeking to exploit its incredible commercial potential together. This is an excellent example of leading-edge British science being harnessed to drive economic growth and the creation of high-tech jobs," he said. Graphene, discovered by Manchester University scientists Professor Andre Geim and Dr Konstantin Novoselov, is an exceptionally good conductor and the strongest and thinnest material ever measured. Its potential uses include flexible touchscreens, pollution sensors and biomedical sensors.
Drive For Hydrogen Hyundai
The Hyundai ix35 fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) has been selected by the European Commission-backed Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) to be used as a demonstration vehicle to test and promote hydrogen fuel cell technology in a real-world environment. As part of the announcement made today at the FCH JU-organised 'Joint Technology Initiatives: Innovation in Action' exhibition in Brussels, the ix35 FCEV will be made available for Members of European Parliament, Commissioners, EU officials and other policymakers to test drive until March 2012. The decision moves Hyundai a step closer to the commercialisation of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles by 2015. Debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the ix35 features important innovations over previous-generation Hyundai FCEVs, including a 55% improvement in driving range and an 80% reduction in manufacturing costs.

NHS Disability Care 'Failures' Slammed In Report
Care for people with learning disabilities has come under fire after a report found the NHS and councils failed to provide appropriate health and social services care. The Health Service and Local Government Ombudsman ruled that one man died as a result of these failings and the death of a second man could have been avoided.

Government pledges cash for stem cell research
The government has announced that an extra £50 million will be made available for UK stem cell research over the next two years. The announcement followed the publication of the UK Stem Cell Initiative report, which has recommended that that the government should invest at least £350 million in the research over the next decade.

Police Appeal For Missing 16-Year-Old
Police have appealed for help in tracing 16-year-old Joseph Ogun, who has been missing since Monday, 07 September. Police said they are "increasingly concerned" for his welfare. He is described as a black boy, 5ft 8ins tall, of large build and with dark cropped hair. It is not known what he was last seen wearing.

Baby Dies After Being Bitten By Family Pet
A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a baby bitten by dog in Sunderland. The three-week-old baby boy died in hospital following an incident at his home in Falkland Road. Police were called to the address at 04:15 on Saturday, 20 June. It is understood that the baby had been bitten by the families pet dog.

A 10-year-old boy has died after falling into a river in Argyll while on holiday with his family. Emergency services were called to the incident at 13:45 on Tuesday. The boy was rescued by a passer-by after getting into difficulties. He was airlifted to Glasgow for treatment, however he later died at Yorkhill Hospital.
