Man Charged Over Clapton Murder

Detectives investigating the murder of a man in Clapton last week have charged one of the four men arrested over the incident. Martin Terrance Ward, 23, unemployed of no fixed abode is to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on Monday, 31 October charged with the murder of Tommy Lawrence in Mandeville Street, on Thursday, October 27. Ward was arrested on Saturday. Officers at the Metropolitan Police Service said the three other men, arrested on Friday, have now all been released with no further action. The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is urging homeowners and tenants to take simple steps to guard against the risk of being targeted by burglars this winter.

Police Offer Urge Burglar Awareness

The MPS has launched its seasonal awareness campaign, after new data demonstrates how the public become more vulnerable to burglars during the winter months. Police said that last year, offences increased by one-third between November 2010 and February 2011, compared to April to August. Police said that as evenings got darker, burglars are "on the prowl" for valuables and cash as homes tend to be getting ready for seasonal celebrations and may have gifts and items around and on display. During this period, properties remain in darkness for much longer periods which make them easier to target, especially if there are no obvious signs there is anyone home. Police said they are calling on the public to take simple steps to secure their home from burglars. Advice to Londoners includes: close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes; make sure you do not leave your car keys, valuables or ID documents near a door, letterbox or window; leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home. Commander Christine Jones said: "As part of our commitment, we are determined to raise people's awareness of security with our latest campaign and help stop burglary from happening in the first place."
