Youth Justice Board Scraping 'Madness' - Labour
The Government's attempt to scrap the Youth Justice Board was "madness" according to a Labour MP on Thursday.
The Government abandoned its plans to scrap the board on Wednesday as anger over the decision threatened to derail its Public Bodies Bill, which is currently being scrutinised in the House of Lords.
The Youth Justice Board along with the post of Chief Coroner were planned to be scrapped as part of the Conservative Party's "bonfire of the quangos" policy, which has been met with considerable opposition.
Responding to the u-turn decision, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, Sadiq Khan, said it was madness for the Government to want to abolish the Youth Justice Board.
“The Youth Justice Board has been put under huge pressure this past year with the threat of abolition hanging over its head. The YJB does an important job battling to reduce youth offending.
"It has a proven track record in reducing crime, which is why it was madness for the Government to want to abolish it and why Labour and so many groups have campaigned for its survival with such determination.
Mr Khan went on to warn that the YJB’s work was still being undermined by severe cuts to Youth Offending Teams, which work within communities to cut crime and anti-social behaviour.
"We will continue to oppose these cuts which go too far and too fast and risk the progress we made in reducing youth offending.”
