Appeal Continues Into Newcastle Rape

Police in Newcastle are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about a sexual offence to come forward.

The incident happened between 1.30am and 1.50am on Saturday, December 17, on Barrack Road in the west end of Newcastle, when a 27-year-old woman had been walking along the road, near to Leazes Park.

She was pushed from behind and threatened before being assaulted. Following further enquiries by specialist officers it has now been established that she was raped by the offender.

The suspect is described as being of a dark complexion and spoke with a broken English accent. He's thought to be in his mid 30s, about 6ft tall and of a medium build with dark close cut short hair and stubble on his face. He was wearing dark blue jeans, lighter coloured trainers and a dark hooded top.

DI Paul Race, from Northumbria Police's Rape Investigation Team, said: "The victim remains extremely shaken by what was a horrible ordeal and we're carrying out enquiries to trace the person responsible for this attack.

"Following a previous appeal for witnesses a number of people have come forward with information and we're following up those lines of enquiry.

"We know there were quite a few people in the area at the time and I'd urge anyone who has seen a man of this description on or around the area of Barrack Road and Leazes Park to get in touch with us, as well as any witnesses or anyone with information about who is responsible."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
