Nursing Care Problems To Be Tackled
Nurses will be told to do hourly ward rounds and patients encouraged to carry out their own hospital inspections, under government plans to be unveiled on Friday.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the measures would tackle the "real problem" with patient care in Britain's hospitals.
Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme this morning Mr Cameron said that while he has great respect for the vast majority of nursing care there had been too many instances of neglect and mistreatment.
He said that he had been ‘absolutely appalled’ by the findings of a Care Quality Commission report from October which concluded that one in five hospitals are failing to feed patients properly.
UK Car Registrations Drop 4.4%
UK car registrations declined by 4.4% in 2011 from the previous year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The SMMT said that registrations were down 3.7% in December from the same month of 2010.
Despite the annual fall, new car demand in 2011 came in better than forecast at 1,941,253 units compared with a 1.92mn forecast.
Business Leaders Back HS2
Business leaders and economists have joined forces with union bosses to urge ministers to go ahead with plans for a new high-speed rail link.
In letters to the Financial Times, Daily Telegraph and Guardian newspapers, they said the proposed High Speed 2 between London and Birmingham would boost growth and create jobs.
The final decision on whether or not to go ahead with the controversial rail link has been postponed by the government until this month.
Opponents say the £17bn line, which cuts through the Chiltern hills, will destroy the picturesque landscape. They also say a new rail service is not needed.
There were over 100 signatories to the letters, published on Friday.

Labour had unveiled plans for a radical shake-up to NHS care for the old and disabled. Health Secretary Andy Burnham laid out plans that would see a universal free care package for everyone in England. It had been described as the biggest change to the welfare state since the creation of the NHS.

New Law To Strengthen Protection Of Vulnerable People
Some of the most vulnerable people in society will be better protected against abuse and poor care as a result of new legislation coming into force today. People who lack capacity in hospitals and care homes will now be protected by a new law nown as the 'Mental Capacity Act Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards'.
