Hackers Attack US Gov Sites Over Upload Site

A major internet hacking and activist group, Anonymous, has forced the shutting down of a number of US Government websites, over the closure of file sharing site – Megaupload.

A spokesperson for Anonymous said that within minutes of Megaupload being shut down, and the US Department of Justice releasing a statement to the effect, Anonymous sprang into action and started taking down a ton of sites -- including websites for the Department of Justice, the US Copyright Office, Universal Music, the US Copyright Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The US Department of Justice announced the indictment and arrests of four company executives of Megaupload in New Zealand on Friday.

The founders of the site have been charged with violating US piracy laws.

Co-founder Mathias Ortmann, 40 and Dutch national Bram van der Kolk, 29, were also arrested. Police seized millions of dollars worth of assets from the group, including luxury cars.

"The FBI contacted New Zealand Police in early 2011 with a request to assist with their investigation into the Mega Conspiracy," said Detective Inspector Grant Wormald from the Organised & Financial Crime Agency New Zealand.

"All the accused have been indicted in the United States. We will continue to work with the U.S. authorities to assist with the extradition proceedings," Inspector Wormald said in a statement.

Anonymous said the police action had come just as many members of Congress had changed their stance on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, which led to the 24 hour blackout be Wikipedia, Google and Craigslist.

"The raid on Megaupload Thursday proved that the feds don’t need SOPA or its sister legislation, PIPA, in order to pose a blow to the Web."
