Military Theft Increasing
A parliamentary committee has reported that theft within the military is steadily increasing, while also reporting that the MoD's accounts were "unsatisfactory".
The Defence Committee said it was concerned that the level of theft and fraud in the MoD appear generally to be increasing year on year, and that the level of value recovered from theft and fraud is low.
The committee said the MoD needed to clarify the roles of the various police and security forces dealing with fraud and theft; provide further information on how the problems of prevention, detection and recovery are being managed and, in general, tackle the issue with a "greater degree of vigour".
Meanwhile, the Defence Committee also said that for the fifth successive year, the MoD did not comply with international financial reporting as laid down by the Treasury and had "no plans to do so for the foreseeable future".
The Committee added that the MoD could also not provide adequate audit evidence for over £5.2 billion worth of certain inventory and capital spares.
Chair of the Defence Committee, Rt Hon James Arbuthnot, said: "The repeated qualification of the MoD accounts reflects badly on the MoD's financial management. The situation is unsatisfactory and the MoD and the Treasury need a clear plan to address the shortcomings in the MoD’s accounting systems."

The Old War Office was built in 1902 for the Imperial General Staff and was a focal point throughout the major conflicts of the 20th century. War hero subject of second MoD probe
It has emerged today that Colonel Tim Collins, the British Army commander who won international plaudits for his moving pre-battle speech in Iraq, is the subject of a second MoD probe. The second inquiry surrounds the apparent suicide of an 18-year-old private soldier at Drumaad barracks, Co Armagh in Northern Ireland, two years ago.

'Astonishing' Failure For MoD
The purchase of a new £10.5bn fleet of tankers and transport aircraft by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been criticised as an "astonishing failure". It has been reported by MPs on the influential Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that the MoD agreed to sign up to the deal even though it had no idea whether it was getting value for money.

RAF Aid Drop In Iraq Abandoned Over Safety Fears
A planned aid dropped in Iraq was aborted at the last minute over safety concerns, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. It is understood that a drop on Saturday was successful but a second drop, planned for a mountain in the north of Iraq, was abandoned at the last minute over fears that the cargo would injure those on the ground.
