CRB Checks Show 4,000 Offenders Applying To Be Teachers
Information revealed by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) has shown that over 4,000 offenders, including rapists, paedophiles and drug dealers, applied to become teachers last year.
Released to the Press Association after a request to the CRB the figures show that checks have prevented more than 130,000 unsuitable people from working with children or vulnerable groups.
The Association of School and College Leaders says the number of offenders who apply to teach is "very small".
It also said it is extremely encouraging that the system is picking up people with convictions.
In 2011, 263,000 people who applied to become teachers had CRB checks done with 1.5% of them being rejected on grounds of previous behaviour.
Those rejected had almost 9,500 previous offences between them, including 50 sex offences, 11 for arson and two for making threats to kill.
Separate figures also show that sex offenders and hundreds of violent criminals applied to work in nurseries last year.

Three Jailed After Death Of Television Executive
Three people have been jailed today after television executive Gagandip Singh was attacked and killed in February last year. They include 20-year-old female medical student Mundhill Mundill Kaur Mahil of Gladstone Place, Brighton. She had been convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent and was given six years in a Youth Offenders Institute.

Glitter Ordered To Sign Sex Offenders Register
Former glam rock singer Gary Glitter has been ordered to sign the sex offenders register after arriving back in Britain. Glitter was met at Heathrow Airport by a media scrum as well as police officers from the anti-paedophile Operation Jigsaw. The convicted sex offender, spent three years in a Vietnamese jail for abusing two girls aged 10 and 11.

Kelly announces review of sex offender vetting
Education Secretary Ruth Kelly has announced an "exhaustive" review of the cases of sex offenders granted permission to work in schools. Ms Kelly has been heavily criticised after it emerged that a man was allowed to work as a PE teacher, although he had been cautioned by police for accessing child pornography on the Internet.
