Bank Holiday Bike Ride Planner Launched
Help is on hand for those looking to plan the perfect bike ride over the Easter break, Local Transport Minister Norman Baker has announced.
Any cyclist, from enthusiasts planning a fun and healthy countryside ride over the long weekend to families looking for a safe, pretty route linking city parks can benefit from the Department for Transport’s online cycling journey planner.
Part of the Transport Direct Portal, the planner now covers every road in England. Cyclists tap in their planned start and end points and the tool calculates a route that suits.
Users can easily tweak the settings to meet their needs, filtering journeys to select the quickest, quietest or most recreational routes – those which take them through parks and green spaces. The planner can even plot routes avoiding steep hills.
Norman Baker said: "Cycling is a fantastic leisure activity that’s becoming increasingly popular, and rightly so.
"It’s good fun, it’s good for the environment and it’s good for your health. Indeed, the Chief Medical Officer has suggested that if cycling were discovered today it would be hailed as a miracle cure.
"Our route planner helps people wanting to get out and about and enjoy cycling, as well as those who want to map the best bike route to work."
As well as being great for those cycling for leisure, the planner is also designed to be used by those commuting by bike, who can use the online tool to find a well-lit, direct route to and from work.
The Transport Direct Portal receives more than 2 million visits a month and increasing numbers of people are using the website to plan their journeys by bike.

People Donate £66,000 After Cyclist's Death On Charity Bike Ride
Family and friends of Christian Smith, the cyclist killed while on a charity bike ride, have thanked everyone who has donated money to his JustGiving webpage. Currently, over £66,000 has been donated. Mr Smith was hoping to raise £1,000 for mental health charity Mind. He was taking part in a bike ride around Kent and Sussex last Saturday.

Cyclist Traffic Signals Launched In East London
Bow Roundabout in east London has become the first site to trial low-level traffic lights for cyclists. Transport for London, which hope to introduce the lights at 11 other sites, say that 80% of cyclists are in favour of their use. The new signals give cyclists an early start ahead f traffic.

Police Receive New Leads In Rhys Murder Inquiry
Police investigating the murder of Merseyside schoolboy Rhys Jones have said that they received a good response from an appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch show on Wednesday night. More than 60 calls have been made to the programme following last night's appeal, including 12 calls, which named the same person as a suspect.

Woman Convicted After Tweeting About Hitting Cyclist
A 22-year-old woman has been fined and issued seven penalty points after she tweeted about knocking a cyclist off his bike. Emma Way, of Watton, was found guilty of failure to stop after an accident and failure to report the incident in which she knocked cyclist Toby Hockley off his bike in Norfolk in May.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the death of cyclist in central London. It is understood the female cyclist died after her Barclays Cycle Hire bike collided with a tipper truck. The accident happened at about 08:00 on Victoria Street.
