Rural Areas Hit By Double Inflation

The cost of living is rising twice as quickly in the countryside as in the city, a new study has found.

Insurer NFU Mutual's figures showed that as inflation runs higher on the price of food, fuel and other essentials, rural living is £2,000 a year more expensive than living in the city.

Year-on-year 'rural inflation' averaged 7.7%, compared to the national average of 4.3%.

Moors Murderer Suffers Seizure

The 'Moors murderer', Ian Brady, has been taken to hospital in Merseyside following a seizure.

Brady, 74, was jailed in 1966 for murdering three children and has been tube fed since 1999 when he started starving himself in a suicide bid.

He has applied to be allowed to transfer to a Scottish prison and die.

Tomlinson Trial: 'I Was Wrong To Push Him' Says Accused

The police officer accused of manslaughter following the death of Ian Tomlison has said he was wrong to hit and push him.

PC Simon Harwood hit Mr Tomlinson and pushed him to the ground during G20 protests in London in April 2009.

Mr Tomlison died later.

Harwood said he was "sorry" for what he did and said he would not have done it if he had known at the time that Mr Tomlison was walking away from the police, and was unwell.

The 45-year-old denies manslaughter on the grounds that he used reasonable force.

One in ten UK citizens opt to live broad
A report published today has indicated that around 5.5 million British-born people are living overseas. More than 198,000 British nationals moved overseas last year, bringing the total number of Brits abroad to more than 5.5 million, according to new research from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).

Bank Profits 'Wiped Out'
Major UK banks have had their 45% profit rise of 2012 all but ‘wiped out’ by a mix of regulation and their own mistakes, a KPMG report says. Looking at Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, RBS and Standard Chartered, the performance report shows the banks' combined core profits last year were £31.5bn.

Budget 'To Hit Poorest', Says Labour
The Labour opposition has said that today's 'emergency' Budget will hit the poorest hardest and that the cuts the Tories are implementing are 'ideologically driven'. While the details remain unclear ahead of the Chancellor's speech this afternoon, it is sure to be one of the toughest package of tax increases and spending cuts in a generation.

Many parents hit their children, NSPCC survey claims
Six out of ten parents of babies and toddlers admit to hitting their child, a new survey by the NSPCC has revealed. The research, which involved interviews with 1,000 parents of newborn to four-year-olds in the UK also found that parents lost their temper with their child on average once a week.
