BBC Television Centre Sold For £200m
The BBC has sold its historic Television Centre premises in west London in a deal worth £200m.
Property developer Stanhope plc has bought the historic doughnut-shaped building, which dates back to 1960,, the corporation confirmed on Monday.
TV Centre – once the home of TV classics from Top of the Pops to Blue Peter and which once bore the blast from a car bomb – was put up for sale last year as part of the BBC's latest cost-cutting drive.
US Lobby Group Tries To Stop Plain Cigarette Packaging
A powerful US lobbying group, which bankrolls climate change sceptics and leading members of the Tea Party, is mobilising British opposition against plans to sell cigarettes in plain packs.
As the UK government considers the proposals, it has emerged the American Legislative Exchange Council (Alec), an organisation sponsored by big tobacco and other corporate interests, is playing a key role in trying to scupper them.
Supporters of the plans say they will deter young people from smoking. But opponents say there is little evidence this is the case and warn that generic packs will encourage counterfeiting.
Alec, which proclaims its "belief in the power of free markets and limited government to propel economic growth", has warned countries looking to impose plain packaging that they will be violating intellectual property provisions laid down by the World Trade Organisation, opening themselves to legal challenges.
Suicide Highest Among Older Men
The number of suicides and the prevalence of suicidal tendencies is rising faster among older men than in any other age group, according to research released in the week the government postponed its suicide prevention strategy.
Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that the number of suicides among men aged over 55 has risen by 12% over the past decade, while suicides by men aged under 34 dropped by 30%.
The mental health charity Calm said men aged 45 to 54 were still most likely to seriously consider taking their own life.
Charities and mental health experts are concerned that across all age ranges there are far more male than female suicides
