Arts Council Awarded £43m Funding
The Arts Council England has announced five awards from round one of their capital investment programme.
Five organisations will receive a total of £43,820,500 from the £114.6 million allocated for this round.
Chichester Festival Theatre has been awarded £12 million, High House Production Park, Thurrock: £1 million, Royal Opera House: £10 million, National Theatre: £17.5 million and Southbank Centre (development grant): £3,320,500.
The remaining 21 organisations that were successful at stage one of the programme are continuing to develop their applications.
The programme will address the consolidation and improvement of existing buildings and equipment and is one of a number of measures they are putting in place to support organisations to become more sustainable and resilient businesses, including increasing their environmental performance.
There are three rounds of funding for large Capital grants (over £500,000) with a total of £214.6 million available. Applications to round two have now opened. A budget of £50 million is available in this round, and a further £50 million will be available in 2013/14.
The application deadline for stage one of round two is 17 September 2012.
A fund of £20 million will be available for a number of small Capital projects, for awards between £100,000 and £500,000, to help ensure that arts organisations have the right buildings and equipment to deliver work for the benefit of artists and audiences across the country.
This funding will be available in two rounds over two years, opening in late September 2012.

UK solar gets £2.2m grant boost
Energy Minister Stephen Timms today announced a further £2.2 million in funding awards for solar energy projects throughout the UK. Twenty-four projects were chosen for funding at a grant cost of just over £2.2 million resulting in almost 650kWp being directly funded in this round. (Kilowatt peak (kWp) is the maximum power output on a sunny day.

Crossrail Boost As BAA Agree £230m Funding
Crossrail took a significant step forward today thanks to the agreement of a £230 million funding package from BAA, Transport Minister Andrew Adonis and BAA's Strategy Director Mike Forster have announced. In return, Crossrail will guarantee a fast train service four times an hour for the majority of the day.

More Universities To Benefit As HEFCE Funds £60m Of New Projects
A further £60 million of capital funding has been approved by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) with some projects able to start as soon as this month. This makes up the second round of a programme to accelerate capital spending for projects in universities and colleges that have the greatest impact on economic recovery.

World Cup over for Owen following knee injury
England striker Michael Owen is returning home from the World Cup after a scan revealed that he ruptured his anterior cruiate knee ligament during Tuesday's match against Sweden. The 26-year-old Newcastle player was forced to leave the pitch just a minute into England's final group match against Sweden in Cologne on Tuesday night.

British tennis number one Tim Henman swept to a straight sets victory over Frenchman Michael Llodra to go on to the third round of Wimbledon, on Thursday. The sole Briton left in this year's Wimbledon singles draw, Henman won 6-4 6-4 6-3 to take on Robin Soderling in the next round.
