Chancellor George Osborne Booed At Paralympics Medal Ceremony
Chancellor George Osborne's stint as a Paralympic medal presenter was marred yesterday when spectators booed his name.
Jeering erupted when his name was announced at the 80,000-seater Olympic Stadium, where he was due to present medals to the winners of the men's T38 400m race.
Prime Minister David Cameron also received a scathing reception from Paralympic crowds, but boos for him were drowned out by cheers for double gold-winning swimmer Ellie Simmonds.
Mr Osborne, who has been in charge of the UK's public spending since 2009 during a period of budget and benefit cuts, laughed off the boos at first but soon looked embarrassed, before going through with the medal presentation to the race winners, including Mohamed Farhat Chida of Tunisia, who took gold.
The coalition government of which Mr Osborne is a part has also come under fire from disabled rights and welfare groups for awarding the contract for 'fit to work' assessments to private company Atos.
