Retailers anxious as high street spending dips
Retailers have suffered the first significant year-on-year fall in sales volumes for four years, according to the CBI's Monthly Distributive Trades Survey published today.
Had retailers been expected the figures for March to show an improvement on the February performance, hopes were dashed for the sixth survey in a row.
Only 28% of firms said sales were up on March last year, while 41% said they were down. The difference between the two gives a balance of minus 13%, the first significant fall since January 1999 (-9) and the lowest balance since July 1992 (-15).
Stocks have been run down to their lowest level in nearly two years as retailers cut their orders with suppliers for the third successive survey.

ONS Figures Show Homicide At Lowest rate For 30 Years
The homicide rate in England and Wales has fallen to its lowest level in nearly 30 years, figures from the Office for National Statistics show. 550 homicides were recorded in 2011-12, 88 fewer than the previous year and the lowest number since 1983.

M&S To Charge For Carrier Bags
High Street retailer Marks and Spencer has announced plans to charge customers 5p for each plastic bag they use. Customers at the company's stores will be given free long-lasting bags from the beginning of April, before the new charge is introduced on May 6.

Emergency Text Service To Be Tested
A pilot scheme of a new emergency text message alert system is underway in Glasgow. From 2pm this afternoon, O2 customers will receive three messages as a test of the system. It is understood that the texts will make clear that it is just a test and that they are part of a trial.

GPs have continued their opposition of the sweeping reforms to the NHS proposed by the Government as a crucial House of Lords debate on the issue begins on Tuesday morning. A survey published just ahead of the debate found that most GPs think the Health and Social Care Bill should be withdrawn.
