Flood Warnings Issued As Weather Worsens

As heavy rain continues across parts of the UK over 200 homes have been flooded and train services disrupted.

Northern England is the most affected but around 70 area’s in England and Wales are being warned to expect flooding.

The Met office has said that some places could see an average fortnight’s rainfall of 50mm (2in).

Elsewhere, flooding has closed sections of major roads, with more than 100 vehicles trapped on a 30-mile stretch of the A1 in North Yorkshire.

The road is expected to stay shut in both directions between junction 49 (Dishforth) and junction 60 (Bradbury) for most of Tuesday.

In England, the Environment Agency has issued 78 flood warnings - indicating flooding is expected - for the Midlands, the North East and North West. There is one in place for Wales.

There are 151 less serious flood alerts - indicating flooding is possible - for many parts of England and Wales.

In Scotland, there are 10 flood warnings, mostly for the Borders, while in Northern Ireland there is no flood warning system but the Met Office has warned of persistent rain and gales.

Summer A Washout As Heavy Rain Is Forecast

Flood Warnings Remain In Place
A number of flood warnings remain in place across the UK today as further heavy rain is expected. The south and south-east of England, as well as Wales are thought to be the worst affected areas. Three severe flood warnings have been issued for Dorset, with more than 100 lower-level warnings given for across England and Wales.
