Plans Submitted For Second Gatwick Runway
Work will begin on detailed plans for a second runway at Gatwick airport, which would double annual capacity to 70 million passengers, bosses have said.
The airport's owners say they will scrutinise the options to develop the site up to 2020 and beyond.
The plans will now be put to an independent aviation commission led by former Financial Services Authority boss Sir Howard Davies.
Campaigners however fear expansion will raise noise levels and harm the environment.
Under a legal agreement signed in 1979, no runway will be built before 2019.
However Gatwick bosses believe additional "capacity and flexibility" would help ensure London's airports provide south-east England with the connectivity needed.
Chief executive Stewart Wingate said: "Over the last three years we have transformed the airport, invested around £650m and have a strong track record for delivering key routes to growth markets," he said.
"However, we must now look to the future when Gatwick will become full and outline its long-term role in ensuring London has an efficient and resilient airport system that creates the crucial connectivity London and the UK needs."

Race hate preacher deported
Race hate cleric Abdullah al-Faisal has been deported from Britain, Home Secretary John Reid has confirmed. The 39-year-old, who is of Jamaican origin, is understood to have left Gatwick airport, bound for Jamaica, around midday, accompanied by two police escorts and an immigration officer.

London bombings affect air traffic
BAA has reported a 2.6% increase in UK airport traffic figures in July, compared with last year, with its seven airports handling a record 14.6 million passengers last month. However, the airport operator said that the London bombings on July 7 had affected the increase.

Gatwick Reveal Second Runway Plans
Gatwick Airport has unveiled its preferred location for a second runway in expansion plans submitted to the Davies Commission. It is understood that the proposed second runway would be located south of the existing runway.

Gatwick Airport Begins Ebola Screening
Gatwick Airport has started screening passengers arriving from countries currently at risk of the Ebola virus. The screening will commence at the north terminal of the airport, but will be extended at the south terminal by the end of this week.
