Two in court over cocaine smuggling charges

Two brothers from Rochdale are expected to appear in court in Manchester today to face charges over attempting to smuggle around 4.5 kilos of cocaine into the UK.

Lee James Garside, aged 24, from Middleton, Rochdale, and 22-year-old Wayne Garside, also from Middleton, were charged with attempting to import a Class A drug through Liverpool Airport on Saturday.

Customs officers found the Class A drugs - with an estimated street value of up to £300,000 - in a suitcase following a flight from Amsterdam on Friday.

Customs spokesperson Phil Rogers said: "This latest seizure has stopped a significant amount of illegal drugs from reaching our streets.

"It shows Customs' commitment to working, in line with the UK government's strategy, to reduce the availability of Class A drugs."
