Charity Donations Fall 20%
Donations to charity have fallen by 20% in real terms in the past year, with £1.7bn less being given, says a report.
The amount fell from £11bn to £9.3bn in 2011/12 - a fall of £2.3bn when adjusted for inflation, the study said.
The number of people donating fell - as did the amounts they gave, from an average of £11 to £10 a month.
The report, based on a survey of 3,000 people, was compiled by the Charities Aid Foundation and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.
60% Jump In Children In Homeless Accommodation
The number of homeless children and pregnant women living in bed and breakfasts has jumped by 60% in a year, according to a report.
Homeless Bound, by the National Housing Federation, also says more than a third of families with children living in B&Bs had been there longer than the government's six-week limit, a 200% increase in two years.
Local authorities are supposed to use hotels and hostels as a temporary measure. Rooms are often extremely basic. Those placed in such accommodation have no cooking facilities, and usually share bathrooms with other families.
The federation warns that a "perfect storm" of rising rents, insecure private tenancies and a lack of affordable housing has led to a sharp increase in homelessness, with many low-income families now facing "the very real prospect of being homeless".
Newsnight Reporter Questioned By Funding Body
The chief reporter behind the disastrous Newsnight report that wrongly linked a former Tory peer with allegations of child sexual abuse was formally questioned on Monday by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism's funding body.
Angus Stickler, the former BBC journalist who researched and fronted the Newsnight film on 2 November, was interviewed by the bureau's trustees in London.
He was asked to provider further information and return for questioning on Thursday.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism has launched an urgent inquiry into the Newsnight film, which it says was "100% overseen by the BBC". The bureau's trustees, chaired by James Lee, hope to publish their report by Friday.
