SAS Veteran To Appeal Jail Sentence
An SAS veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan will lodge an appeal on Wednesday against a decision to jail him for possessing a pistol and live ammunition at his home in Britain.
Members of the special forces were angered when Sgt Danny Nightingale was jailed this month after pleading guilty to possessing a Glock 9mm pistol that he said was given to him after he left Iraq in 2007. Many rounds of live ammunition, including 50 armour piercing bullets, were also found at his home.
The father-of-two, who had been an SAS sniper, pleaded guilty on the understanding, his family and lawyers say, that he would get a lenient sentence, perhaps suspended. He was jailed for 18 months.
Catholic Institute Liable For Abuse At School
A Catholic teaching institute is liable for alleged physical and sexual abuse at a former boys' school, the Supreme Court has ruled.
Claims of abuse are being made by 170 former pupils of St William's in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire.
Judges said the De La Salle Brotherhood was liable along with the Middlesbrough diocese which owned the school.
St William's, which looked after boys aged 10 to 16 with emotional and behavioural problems until it closed in 1992, had been owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough, but many of the staff were members of the De La Salle Brotherhood.
A former principal at the school and former De La Salle member, James Carragher, was jailed in 2004 for abusing pupils.
McAlpine To Donate Tweeters Compensation
Lord McAlpine, the former Conservative party treasurer, is to donate the compensation he receives from those who posted defamatory comments about him on Twitter to the BBC's Children in Need appeal.
The Tory peer has asked those who falsely linked him to child abuse allegations to apologise formally and pay a "sensible and modest amount".
A statement from Lord McAlpine's lawyers said: "The fixed donation amount is yet to be assessed. However, this will be to Lord McAlpine's charity of choice, BBC Children In Need, and will be in addition to an administration fee."
