Surgeons To Repair Missing Part Of Malala Yousafzai’s Skull

Pakistani schoolgirl activist Malala Yousafzai is to have a missing part of her skull repaired.

Surgeons at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital have said that two procedures due to be carried out on the 15-year-old.

Malala was discharged from the hospital earlier this month after being shot in the head by the Taliban in October.

The hospital said the surgery would take place in the next 10 days.

Man Drowns After Falling Into Sea In Strong Winds

A man has died after falling into the sea as 85 mph winds battered parts of the UK.

An RNLI crew pulled the man out of the water off the seafront at Torquay in Devon on Tuesday evening but he could not be saved.

He is the second person to die off the Devon coast after the body of a Brixham fisherman was found earlier in the week.

Uni Applications Up On Previous Year

The Ucas admissions services has said the university applications are up on 2012, but have not recovered from 2011.

The application figures, up to the 15 January deadline, show an increase of 2.8% on last year for applicants from the UK for undergraduate courses.

An overall increase of 3.5% was boosted by a recovery in overseas students.

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl activist shot in the head by the Taliban, has been discharged from a Birmingham hospital as an inpatient. The 15-year-old was being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB) after being transferred following the attack in October.

The 'green light' has been given for 15 new NHS hospital developments in a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) deal worth more than £4 billion, it has been announced today. Today's announcement will bring investment in new NHS hospitals to more than £16 billion since 1997, the health department said.
