Partial U-Turn On Bedroom Tax Announced

A partial U-turn of the controversial bedroom tax, making carers and armed forces personnel exempt, has been announced by work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith.

The concessions were announced in a written ministerial statement.

It follows weeks of growing political pressure over the policy, which dominated exchanges last week at prime minister's questions in the Commons.

The changes will mean that about 5,000 approved foster carers will be allowed an additional room as long as they have fostered a child or become a registered carer in the past 12 months.

Adult offspring in the armed forces who are away on operations will be counted as continuing to live at home, as long as they intend to return home.
