Brighton And Hove Council To Consider Drug Rooms

Brighton and Hove City Council are considering providing rooms in which people could use illegal drugs safely without the fear of prosecution, following a recommendation in an independent report commissioned by the council.

Brighton has been described as having had "a drug abuse problem for decades", and it is understood the aim of the drug rooms would be to reduce drug-related deaths.

Sussex Police welcomed the report, while emphasising the importance of a "holistic approach" to illegal drugs, critics have said the move could amount to colluding with poor lifestyle choices, or even illegal behaviour.

The proposal by the Independent Drugs Commission for Brighton and Hove includes providing consumption rooms where people could use their own illegal drugs under the supervision of professional healthcare workers.

Medical would be provided if required in the rooms, often referred to as 'shooting galleries'.
