Pret A Manger To Create 500 Jobs In UK

Pret A Manger, the chain of sandwich shops have announced a plan to create some 500 new jobs in the UK, as part of a drive for recruit 1,000 new staff worldwide.

Sales at the company rose 17%, to £443m in 2012, resulting in a profit increase of 17%, up to £61.1m.

Pret plans to open another 50 new shops worldwide this year, up from 36 new launches last year.

The company started a school-leaver's programme last year aimed at encouraging more British applicants to join the firm.

Teens Leave School Without Sat Results
Thousands of children will be finishing school today without their Standard Assessment Test (Sat) test results. The American company, Educational Testing Services (ETS), responsible for the marking of the tests, has been accused of serial incompetence. There are reports of schools being sent back unmarked papers, some of which remain unopened.

Church Of England Set To Ordain Female Bishops
The first female bishops could be ordained in the Church of England early next year, as the church prepares to formally adopt new legislation. It follows a vote by the general synod in July which accepted the move to allow women to become bishops. A previous vote held in 2012 was defeated by six votes.

More Weekend Shoppers Head For The High Street
More shoppers hit British high streets over the weekend than in the same period last year, it has been revealed. Footfall during Friday, Saturday and Sunday was up 2.7%, according to figures released today. Market analyst Experian cited the time of week New Year's Day fell on as a possible reason for the increase.
