Nobel peace prize nomination for Bush and Blair
US president George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
A Norwegian member of Parliament made the call today saying that the men who headed the Coalition forces in the war in Iraq were worthy of recognition as their actions have created a more stable environment.
The nomination made by Jan Simonsen, a right-wing populist, will raise eyebrows as last year's nomination of former US president Jimmy Carter was widely interpreted as a rebuttal of the current Whitehouse administration.
However, as the nomination was made after this year's February deadline, the world will have to wait until April 2004 for the outcome of Mr Simonsen's headline-grabbing nomination.
According to the five-man Nobel committee, Mr Carter's award last year was in recognition of "decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development".
Whether Mr Blair and Mr Bush are in the same bracket will be up to the committee.

Blair and Bush broadcast Iraqi freedom message
British Prime Minister Tony Blair has told the people of Iraq that a “new and better future beckons” for their country. Mr Blair's message was carried via 'Towards Freedom TV', which was broadcast with Arabic subtitles direct to the people of Iraq from an airborne transmitter flying over Baghdad.

British scientist awarded Nobel prize
A British scientist is celebrating today after being named as joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Sir Peter Mansfield, from Nottingham, England, and Paul Lauterbur, from Urbana, Illinois, USA, share the recognition and kudos that an award of this kind brings – along with the 10 Swedish krono (£775,000) reward.

Release Of Bush Blair Memos Vetoed
The public disclosure of a number of secret memos between former Prime Minister Blair and ex US President Bush, sent during the run up to the Iraq invasion, has been blocked. The potentially politically volatile memos were determined to be made public as part of the ongoing Chilcot Inquiry into the war by the inquiry chairman, Sir John Chilcot.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to formally put his weight behind predecessor Tony Blair's bid for the EU presidential office, according to reports. Mr Brown will lobby on behalf of his New Labour ally, who appears to be a forerunner for the first permanent Brussels role, created under the Lisbon Treaty.
