Man Dies In Greenland Ice Trek

The Foreign Office has confirmed a British man has died during an attempt to cross Greenland's ice sheet.

Philip Goodeve-Docker, 30, was taking part in the 400-mile trek with two friends.

The men had planned to trek from east to west across part of the ice cap in 30 days, pulling heavy sleds, or 'pulks', containing their food, equipment and supplies.

However, the men got into difficulties two days into their expedition, after they were caught in a severe snowstorm. The storm, known as 'Piteraq', blew away their tent. They radioed for help, but a helicopter was unable to reach their position until the following morning.

By the time it arrived, Mr Goodeve-Docker was already dead and his two companions, Andy Norman and expedition leader Roan Hackney, were suffering from frostbite and shock.

In a statement from the Foreign Office, it said: "We are aware that three British nationals were in difficulty during an expedition in Greenland, and have been rescued by the authorities.

"Sadly one of the team, Philip Goodeve-Docker, died. The other two British nationals are in hospital. We are providing consular assistance to their families at this difficult time."

Greenland's climate is extremely harsh and more than 80% of the island is covered by an ice cap.
