Daniel Morgan Murder: Corruption Inquiry Launched
A new inquiry into the murder of Daniel Morgan has been announced by Theresa May.
Mr Morgan was murdered in south-east London in March 1987 but no one has been successfully prosecuted, despite five police investigations.
Two years ago, the Metropolitan Police recognised a "repeated failure" to tackle corruption within the investigation.
The independent panel will be chaired by Sir Stanley Burnton, a retired Court of Appeal judge.
It will review how police corruption affected the murder inquiry and how Mr Morgan’s family were treated by the police and criminal justice system.
The Home Secretary said: "The horrific murder of Daniel Morgan and subsequent investigations were dogged by serious allegations of police corruption.
"Several criminal investigations failed to bring those responsible to justice and this independent panel will leave no stone unturned to find out why.
"I am delighted Sir Stanley Burnton has accepted the responsibility of chairing the panel. He brings an enormous amount of expertise from a long career at the top of the legal profession."
The panel is to address connections between police officers, private investigators and journalists at the News of the World and other media involved in the case.
It will also examine documents from government and non-government organisations, including the police and the Crown Prosecution Service.
Sir Stanley Burnton said: "The family of Daniel Morgan, Daniel Morgan himself and the British public have been badly let down by the criminal justice system over 26 years.
"I am determined to do everything I can, as chair of the independent panel, to uncover the facts, the circumstances and the truth behind the previous failed investigations."

Four Held Over 1987 Private Eye Murder
Four men have been remanded in custody in connection with the murder of a private detective in 1987. Daniel Morgan, 37, from Monmouthshire, was found with an axe in his head outside the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, south London. Police say that his Rolex watch had been taken but about £1,100 in cash remained in his pocket.

Major Police Hunt Launched After Boy Taken From Hospital
A major police hunt has begun after a five-year-old boy with a brain tumour, was taken by his family without consent from Southampton General Hospital. Police said that Ashya King was taken from the hospital by Brett King, 51, and Naghemeh King, 45, on Thursday. It is thought he may have been taken to France.

Kent Police, in partnership with officers from the Metropolitan Police Service, have arrested two men in East London on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery. On 3 May, Kent Police began a search for Michael Wheatley, 55, who had failed to return to HMP Standford Hill after being released on temporary licence.
