Communities Given New Powers To Block Windfarms

Communities will be offered greater incentives to accept onshore windfarms alongside new powers to block them, overriding national energy targets.

With the new guidance on allowing residents to block new onshore windfarms, the incentives to accept will be increased, including a five-fold increase in the benefits paid by developers to communities.

The benefits, estimated to be worth around £100,000 for a medium sized farm, could be used to fund local initiatives or reduce energy bills.

The government said the measures would ensure local communities had a greater stake in the planning process.
