Migrant Healthcare Levy To Be Introduced

In an announcement to be made by health secretary Jeremy Hunt later today, migrants coming in to Britain will be expected to pay at least £1,000 up front, for health care during the first five years of their stay.

Alongside this, visitors who come from outside the EU for less that six-months will no longer be able access free GP services, facing a charge similar to that imposed for hospital care.

The healthcare levy will be in addition to current visa application fees, which average around £500.

Critics of the move however, have raised concerns over newly arrived migrants avoiding visiting a GP or hospital as they cannot afford the charge and carrying around serious untreated infections.
