Sainsbury's Apologise For Assistant Refusing Service

Sainsbury's super has apologised to a customer after a checkout assistant refused to serve her until she had ended a call on her mobile phone.

The customer, named by the BBC as Jo Clarke, was in a store on Crayford, south east London, when she was told her items wouldn't be checked out until she was finished on her phone.

Saying that is was not company policy, Sainsbury's issued an apology to her along with the offer of a £10 voucher.

Ofcom Proposes Changes To Superfast Broadband

Ofcom have put forward a number of proposals they say will lead to better deals for superfast broadband customers.

They want to cut the costs paid by providers when switching customers and shorten the minimum length of contracts.

It is understood the regulator hopes to promote competition among providers.

Thousands Join Queen For Garden Party

Some 8,000 invited guests are expected to join the Queen in Scotland for a garden party.

The annual event takes place in the grounds of Edinburgh's Palace of Holyroodhouse and is due to begin today at 16:00.

It follows presentations earleir today of New Years Honours.

Superfast Internet On The Way
The government has revealed plans to boost the UK broadband network in Europe by 2015. By the end of this Parliament, under a new plan titled Britain's Superfast Broadband Future, the government will invest around £830m launching a digital hub across every community. The high-speed hubs will extend internet access across the country.

Wales Live News Pilot Dumped
There's muted disappointment at a regional TV station this week as a pilot scheme to provide a replacement news service for ITV Wales is now to be scrapped. The new government's Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt said that it would be "inappropriate" to spend scarce public money "propping up expensive regional news services".

Lord Sainsbury resigns as minister
Science Minister Lord Sainsbury has resigned from his post. The former supermarket boss, one of the Labour party's biggest supporters, cited personal reasons for the decision to step down from the government post.
