Strategy To Increase Organ Donations Launched
Families may be prevented from stopping the donation of organs by people who have signed the register.
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) have said that they want to ensure a person's wish to donate is honoured when they die.
A new strategy has been developed to try and build on the 50% increase in deceased donations since 2008.
The aims of the strategy are to:

The aims of the strategy are to:
- Improve consent/authorisation rates to organ donation to above 80% (currently 57%)
- Bring the UK deceased donor rate up to 26 per million of the population (currently 19pmp)
- Transplant 5% more of the organs offered from consented, actual donors (currently 92% of actual donors result in at least one organ transplant)
- Increase the number of patients receiving a transplant to 74 per million of the population (currently 49pmp)
John Pattullo, Chairman of NHS Blood and Transplant, the organisation that manages the process of organ donation across the UK, said: "This is a bold and ambitious strategy that will give more people a realistic chance of receiving a life-saving or life-enhancing transplant. Despite recent success we know more must be done to address the shortage of donated organs across the UK.
"The strategy calls for a revolution in public attitudes and behaviours, emphasising the importance of individuals and their families agreeing to donate when and if they can."
The strategy has the backing of the four UK health ministers.

Law change for organ donors
Radical changes to laws governing organ and tissue donation are being introduced, which may lead to more life-saving transplant operations. Under the Human Tissue Act 2004, which comes into effect on September 1, relatives will no longer have the right to overrule the wishes of loved ones to donate organs or tissue after their death.

Baby Zoe has heart transplant
The baby girl at the top of the heart transplant list has received a donor heart. At just 18-months-old Zoe Chambers from Hull had already suffered six heart attacks due to a narrow heart valve. Doctors at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle say that the transplant operation went well and Zoe is in a stable condition.

UK Sees Record Organ Transplant Numbers
The number of organ transplant operations carried out across the UK has risen to a record high, according to the NHS. The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) service revealed that there were 4,212 transplants in 2012-13, indicating an increase of 6% on the previous year.
