Arrests Made Over Suspected Wolverhampton Explosion

Two men are being held by police in connection with suspected terrorist acts.

A number of streets around Wolverhampton Central Mosque were evacuated on Thursday evening after police received information of a possible explosive device.

It is understood police were acting on information received about a suspected incident on June 28 in which an unspecified device had been "activated".

Police say they received this information during the course of another investigation into recent attacks near mosques.

According to the BBC, during a search Army bomb specialists found "the seat of an explosion and debris on the island near the mosque."

It is now believed that an explosive device may have been placed at the site on June 27, exploding the next morning.

Reports of a "loud bang" were made on June 28, but police did not know the location of the suspected explosion.

Two men, understood to be eastern European, have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

The investigation is ongoing.
