Pair Jailed For Life For Fire That Killed Three

Two men, convicted of starting a fire that killed three members of a family, have been jailed for life.

Thomas Sharkey Snr (55), his son Thomas Jnr (21), and daughter Bridgette (8) where killed in the fire at the home in Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute in July 2011.

38-year-old Scott Snowden was sentenced to a minimum term of 33 years and 50-year-old Robert Jennings was give a 29 year minimum term, following an 11 week trial at the Glasgow High Court.

The two men were also convicted of the attempted murder of Angela Sharkey, 48, who survived the fire.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Chief Fire Officer Resigns Over Child Porn Arrest
A top fire officer for the West Midlands Fire Service has resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children. West Midlands Police arrested Frank Sheehan, 55, yesterday at his home in Sutton Coldfield.

Inmate Given Second Life Term For Mark Bridger Attack
An inmate who attacked Mark Bridger in prison has been given a second life sentence. 24-year-old convicted murderer and rapist Juvinal Ferreira attacked Bridger, jailed for the murder of five-year-old April Jones, with a knife, made from a razor, at Wakefield prison in July.
