Report Finds Increase In Number Earning Below Living Wage

A think tank has reported findings that the number of workers in the UK earning below the so-called living wage has risen to 4.8 million, up from 3.4m in 2009.

The figure of 4.8m is the equivalent to 20% of UK employees, according to Resolution Foundation.

Their report found:

• 25% of female (2.9m) and 15% of male (1.9m) employees earned less than the Living Wage in 2012

• employees aged 20 and under (77%) earned less than the living wage

• in the South East and London 16% of employees were earning less than the living wage, alongside 23 per cent in Wales and more than 20 per cent in many other parts of Britain

• Pay below the Living Wage is most common in the hotels and restaurants sector, where 67% are low paid; It is least common in public administration and defence at 2%

Increase In Living Wage Rate
The UK Living Wage Rate has risen by 2.6% from today, Monday, and set to £7.85 per hour. According to the Living Wage Foundation it is 21% higher than the national minimum wage of £6.50 per hour. This will improve the take home pay of 35,000 low-paid workers across the country who are employed by over 1,000 Living Wage accredited organisations.

National Gallery Staff Return To Work Following Strike
Staff members at the National Gallery have returned to work after an agreement was reached to end a dispute over privatisation. Members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union took industrial action on 11 August. Since February, it has taken more than 100 days of strike action.

'Billions' Of Welfare Cuts Announced In Budget
Chancellor George Osborne has unveiled the first Conservative Budget since 1996 at the House of Commons. The Budget will see billions of welfare cuts come into effect, while a new "national living wage" of over £9 an hour will be introduced by 2020. Student grants are also being dropped, while benefits will be frozen.

Green Party Calls For £10 Minimum Wage
The Green Party is calling for a £10 minimum wage for everyone by 2020. The party believes every worker over the age of 16 should be paid at least the minimum wage and would abolish the age-based differential rates currently in place. Raising the minimum wage to living wage levels would benefit an estimated 5.

New UK Living Wage Increases
Over 30,000 low-paid workers stand to get a pay rise of up to £400 a year because they work for companies signed up with the Living Wage Foundation as a Living Wage Employer. The UK Living Wage rate rose today by 20p to £7.65 per hour, and the London Living Wage rate rose by 25p to £8.
