Gay Rights Groups Propose Church Opt In Policy

An opt in system should be established for churches in Scotland that wish to conduct same-sex marriages, MSPs have been told.

Representatives of two gay rights groups, Equality Network and Stonewall Scotland, made the recommendation to the Equal Opportunities Committee, who are gathering evidence about the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill.

The Bill was introduced in June but is currently undergoing review by committee members and the Scottish Parliament chamber.

It is understood that the government want to revise the law, while protecting the rights of religious groups who do not wish to conduct the ceremonies.
