Four Councils To Challenge Boris Johnson On 'Affordable Rent'
The London Plan, an initiative by Mayor Boris Johnson, is to be challenged over the "affordable rent" allocated in the plan.
Under the new plan, rents can be set at up to 80% of the market price.
However, councils in Southwark, Islington, Tower Hamlets and Camden say that this allowance would result in many of the residents currently renting in the boroughs no longer being able to afford to do so under the new plan.
The London Plan was passed last Wednesday, despite the London Assembly voting by a majority to reject in. The motion however, did not receive the two-thirds it needed to overturn the proposal.
It is understood that Boris Johnson expects rents to average out at around 65%, but that developers of new properties would be able to charge up to 80%.
The four councils hope to seek a judicial review of the afford rent allocated within the London Plan.
