Govt To Pilot New Emergency Text Alert System

A new mobile phone emergency alerts system, which sends text messages to people in areas affected by flooding, industrial accidents and other disasters, is to tested in three UK cities, amid fears that the system could be targetted by hackers.

Residents in Easingwold, North Yorkshire, Leiston in Suffolk and Glasgow will be used in a pilot scheme of the new system, which is based on similar systems used in the US, the Netherlands and Australia.

The government are working with mobile providers O2, Vodafone and EE, and the scheme is due to start this month and continue into October.

A report on the new system is expected in early 2014.
