Tribunal Hears McCririck Age Unrelated To Sacking
An employment tribunal has heard that John McCririck was dropped from Channel 4's racing coverage as he was "seen by many as a comic act rather than a serious horse racing journalist."
73-year-old McCririck has accused Channel 4 of age discrimination, a claim that the channel and IMG Media deny.
C4's commissioning editor for sport, Jamie Aitchison, is reported to have told the tribunal that McCririck's age was not a factor in the decision to drop him from their horse racing programmes.
He is quoted as saying: "John McCririck's exaggerated tone and style and propensity to offend was out of step with the vision for the programme, and also unappealing and irritating to many current and potential viewers."
McCririck claim maintains that his image as sexist and bigoted goes "side-by-side" with his career as a serious journalist.
The hearing continues.
