Family of four die in motorway collision
A family of four have been killed following a road smash on the M1 in the early hours of this morning.
The four died – two adults and a boy and a girl – after an articulated lorry collided with the rear of their car at around 12.20am. Their vehicle was shunted into another articulated lorry in front. All the vehicles had slowed for road works on the motorway.
Bedfordshire Police have arrested a 46-year-old man from Swindon, who was driving the lorry behind the car. He is currently being questioned at Dunstable Police Station.
The motorway was completely closed between junctions 13 and 14 northbound from 12.45am to 6am. Diversions were from junction 13, along the A421 and back on at junction 14.
Bedfordshire Police Collision Investigation Unit is currently trying to trace the next of kin of the family who died. It is known that the family were from the Northampton area.
This was the sixth fatal road traffic collision on the Bedfordshire stretch of the motorway since October 2002.
Sergeant Colin Bonner, leading the investigation is keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or events leading up to it, particularly drivers who may have been on the southbound carriageway at the time.

A police patrol car crashed head-on into a car travelling the wrong way along a motorway. West Midlands Police say that a Honda Jazz car was reported to be driving at 50mph the wrong way on the A38 near Sutton Coldfield, at about 21:50 on Tuesday. The car was being driven a 77-year-old man with dementia, who had been reported missing from his home.

Motorway Closed Following Collision
Scotland's busiest motorway, the M8, has been closed following a multi-vehicle collision near Livingston. It is understood that two people have been taken to hospital following the crash at about 08:45. A van, a car and a lorry are understood to have been involved in the incident. Police said that there are long tailbacks and delays are expected.
