UK Provides Assistance In Central African Republic
The UK is providing air transport assistance to French troops in the Central African Republic.
The news follows a United Nations Security Council adopted resolution authorising the deployment of the African-led International Support Mission to CAR (MISCA) and the deployment of French forces to give assistance.
600 French troops have been dispatched to CAR to boost African Union forces already there.
A further 400 are expected to arrive this evening and a further 200 over the weekend.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "The UN Security Council made an important decision yesterday to authorise African Union and French troops to respond to the security and humanitarian crisis in the Central African Republic.
"We are determined to play our part in helping to address the violence. We have therefore agreed with the Government of France that we will help move French equipment to CAR by means of a UK C-17 transport aircraft. Three separate flights will take place this month, with the first one due to land in CAR shortly.
"This comes on top of £10m in UK aid announced on 30 November. Having already contributed £5m in July, the United Kingdom is now one of the largest donors of humanitarian assistance to the people of CAR. We will continue to work alongside the International Red Cross and UN agencies to help thousands of people gain access to food, water, shelter, sanitation and healthcare to alleviate the desperate humanitarian suffering."

At an update meeting on the case of the deaths of three Britons and a cyclist in the French Alps, police have said their main line of enquiry remains a dispute over family inheritance. Saad al-Hilli was shot dead along with his wife, Iqbal, her mother Suhaila al-Allaf and French cyclist Sylvain Mollier on 05 September 2012.

Anti-polio vaccination programme to target Africa's 63m children
African countries have today begun a massive, synchronized polio immunization campaign which aims to vaccinate 63 million children over the next few days. The programme kicked off one month after an emergency WHO meeting of Health Ministers committed to end polio transmission in 2004.

Acid Attack Victims Due Back In UK
The two 18-year-old British women injured in an acid attack in Zanzibar are due to arrive back in the UK today. Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee were in the last week of a volunteer teaching job they had taken on the east African island when they had acid thrown at them as they walked through Stone Town.

Man Arrested On Behalf Of South African Authorities
Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service's Extradition Unit yesterday, arrested Shrien Prakash Dewani, 30, on behalf of the South African authorities. Mr Dewani surrendered himself at a Bristol police station and was arrested at 10.
