UK holidaymakers pay over the odds says report
A new report into holiday packages has said that many British holidaymakers are paying over the odds for their trips abroad.
The Holiday 2003 report, by independent travel agency Travelcare, investigated 50 travel agencies near airports.
It showed that many agents push customers towards their own products, even if a better and cheaper deal is available.
One example revealed how two Going Places agents offered their own brand Airtours holidays despite the availability of similar holidays at around £300 cheaper.
The report also said that many holidaymakers believe that travel firms such as Lunn Poly and Thomas Cook are independent, which they are not.
As a result of the analysis, which has the backing of Trading Standards, researchers behind the study have called for the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to launch an investigation.
A spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators backed the call for tighter regulation and said that practice of this kind was known to go on and such matters should be raised with the OFT.
