New Chairman Pledges Cheaper HS2 Project

The HS2 high-speed rail project has been taken over by Sir Dave Higgins, who has pledged to deliver the project "more cheaply".

Critics of the scheme have highlighted spiralling costs, but Sir Higgins told the BBC that the HS2 project was the only way to make a "step-change" to the UK's transport capacity.

Minister have also argued that the rail project will create jobs and help to boost the economy.

The project has been estimated to cost some £43 billion, but it is understood that this figure does not include the trains, which are expected to cost a further £7bn.

The former Network Rail chief executive has taken over as chairman of the HS2 project.
