Life For Man Who Killed Family After Reaction To Cancer Drugs
A man who killed his wife and daughter after suffering an adverse psychiatric reaction to chemotherapy drugs has been jailed for a minimum of 17 years.
70-year-old Peter Redfern was convicted of strangling his wife, Jean (67), and bludgeoning his daughter Sarah (33) to death with a hammer at their home in Wath-upon-Dearne in July 2013.
Redfern had been diagnosed with a form of incurable bone cancer in May 2013 and had signed up to a national trial for treatment with particular drug combinations.
It is understood that the studies have revealed that in a "very small percentage" of case the drugs Mr Redfern was taking could lead to adverse psychiatric reaction, which was observed to be generally mild or moderate. However, in "a small number of cases" the effects could be series.
The court had heard that the bodies of Jean and Sarah were found, with bags over their heard sealed with electrical tape, after Mr Redfern called 999 and told an operator: "I've just killed my wife and daughter."
Redfern was jailed for life, with a minimum sentence of 17 years. It is understood that the judge said Redfern would likely "die in prison".

23 Charged With Drug Offences Following Raids
More than 20 people have been charged with drug offences following a number of raids carried out in London, Gravesend, Dover and Deal. A total of 23 people were arrested during twenty raids carried out over three days. The suspects, ranging in age from 17 to 52, have all been charged in connection with the supply of class A drugs.

A gang of criminals who ran a lucrative drug dealing network from a car tyre shop in Brixton were sentenced last week to a total of 81 years in prison. Nine men, who were previously convicted of conspiracy to supply class A drugs, appeared at Kingston Crown Court today to hear their sentences.

Man Arrested Over 2006 Murder
Merseyside Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from Bootle in connection with the murder of father-of-one Stephen Lloyd in 2006. Mr Lloyd, 25, was shot as he sat in his car outside MWM Skip Hire in Redfern Street shortly after 5pm on Thursday 13 July 2006.

Men bailed over Merseyside van shooting
Three men arrested in connection with the murder of a man shot dead in his van in Merseyside last year have been released on bail. The men, aged 22, 23 and 32 and all from Bootle, were arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday. Stephen Lloyd, 25, was shot dead as he sat in his van in Redfern Street in Bootle just after 5pm on July 13 last year.
