Woman Falls From Roof After Man Cleared Of Rape

A 41-year-old woman has died after falling from a shopping centre roof at 09:30 GMT.

Police negotiators were trying to deter her when she apparently jumped.

The female fell from the car park roof at the Wheatsheaf centre in Rochdale days after a man accused of raping her was acquitted by a jury.

Ambulance staff were on stand-by and she was taken to hospital in a life-threatening state, where she later died.

On Friday, the woman seemed angry and disturbed when specially trained officers told her of the acquittal earlier in the day, the Manchester Police said.

Later she called the police in a distressed state and officers returned to her home along with ambulance staff. She became calmer when the officers and paramedics visited her at home.

Greater Manchester Police have referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and a full investigation is to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
