Stowaway plucked from English Channel

A stowaway from the Ivory Coast has been rescued from the English Channel today after he jumped overboard in the early hours of this morning.

The 25-year-old man was discovered aboard the 'Patricia Delmas' and placed in the vessel's brig. However, he managed to escape and jump overboard at around 2.40am this morning. The ship was about 12 miles south of Eastbourne at the time.

Dover Coastguard co-ordinated the search and brought in a Coastguard rescue helicopter and lifeboats from Newhaven and Eastbourne to begin a search.

The warship 'Lindisfarne' and the ferry Dieppe also joined the search.

Luckily, the man was found in the water one-and-a-half hours later and was taken to shore.

Les Drew, Dover Coastguard's Senior Watch Manager said: "We would like to praise the master for his fast response in contacting us. It certainly helped in finding him within an hour and a half."
