Barclays Announce 7,000 UK Job Cuts

Barclays Bank have announced plans to cut up to 12,000 jobs, including 7,000 in the UK.

Around half of the staff to be affected by the cuts have been informed, the bank have said.

The new round of cuts follow 7,650 job loses last year, with the bank saying that 820 senior managers will be cut along with 220 managing directors and 600 directors.

The bank have said that is hopes to achieve the cuts voluntarily.

HSBC Announce Thousands Of UK Job Cuts
HSBC has announced 8,000 job cuts in its UK workforce, as part of a global effort to reduce costs and "simplify its business". Europe's largest bank, which currently employs 48,000 people in the UK, has said that it will seek to make 25,000 job cuts globally, reducing its worldwide workforce of 266,000 by about 10%.

Troubled lender Northern Rock plans to axe 2,000 jobs within three years, it has been reported. The bank has been struggling since last year due to unsettling financial conditions sparked off by the global credit crunch. Long queues formed outside the bank last September as savers tried to withdraw their savings.

North Sea Oil Company Announce Job Cuts
Oil company Taqa has announced it is cutting one hundred jobs because of the "challenging environment" of the North Sea industry. The company said it is consulting with its workforce over the job cuts, which it expects to be mostly contractors and consultants in onshore positions.

Unite union leaders have attacked an announcement by the Royal Bank of Scotland on Tuesday of "brutal" cuts of 600 jobs from its financial planning service. 2,200 Job Cuts Confirmed At HSBC
HSBC has confirmed that it is to cut more than 2,200 jobs in the UK as part of its global cost-cutting plans. Over 3,100 posts are being closed but the bank said that new roles were being created as well, which would result in 2,217 staff leaving.
