Spanish Ambassador Summoned Over 'Incursion'

The Foreign Office has summoned the Spanish ambassador Fedrerico Trillo to explain why a Spanish state research vessel entered into the Gibraltar territorial waters after what it called a "serious incursion".

The Europe Minister David Lidington described the alleged incursion of the Tuesday as "provocative" and urged Spain to ensure it was not repeated after said the "incursion" was "unlawful" and "dangerous".

The Spanish research ship was accompanying by a Guardia Civil police vessel.

Mr Lidington said: "Her Majesty's Government will continue to take whatever action we consider necessary to uphold British sovereignty and the interests of Gibraltar, its people, its security and economy."

It is the fourth time since December 2011 that the current Spanish ambassador has been publicly summoned by Britain.

Britain has had Gibraltar sovereignty since 1713.

Relations over the area have deteriorated since Gibraltar built an artificial reef last year which the Spanish Government said damaged the Spanish fishing industry.

Last February the Foreign Office issued a "formal protest" after a Spanish warship entered waters around Gibraltar and disrupted a Royal Navy training exercise.
