18th Century Shipwreck Given Protected Status

English Heritage has designated an 18th Century ship off the Northumberland coast a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

A tidal surge exposed the remains of the wooden vessel, which lies 650m (2,130ft) off Bamburgh Castle, last year.

A study suggests that the vessel dates from around 1770 and is most likely English.

It will be an offence to damage the vessel.

Rail Fare Dodger Avoids Prosecution

The TSSA claim that a fare dodger has been allowed to "buy silence", despite having avoided paying train fares for years.

It is understood that the traveller, a hedge fund manager, reached an out-of-court settlement with rail operator Southeastern, that saw him repay £42,550 – meaning he avoided prosecution and remain anonymous.

The company claim that the settlement was the quickest way to recover the lost fares.

However, the rail union has said that the man avoided prosecution only because he could afford to repay the money he had defrauded, adding that: "There seems to be one law for the rich and one law for the poor when it comes to criminal prosecution.

"The rich seem to be able to walk away and claim secrecy while the poor get hauled up in front of the local magistrates court and publicly ridiculed."
