The child is understood to have been crossing the Leeds-Liverpool canal on a pipe when he lost his balance near Lowerhouse Lane, Burnley, at around 7pm on Tuesday.

A passerby pulled the boy from the water and gave him CPR until firefighters arrived. The youngster was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, but died later.

First Person To Be Prosecuted In UK For NekNominate Game

A 22-year-old man has become the first person in the UK to be prosecuted in relation to the internet 'drinking game', NekNominate.

The man, named as Gavin Hope, emptied lager into a pint glass, followed chilli, a strong spirit and a fresh egg and then, showing his goldfish pet to the camera in a glass of water, he swallowed it before the cocktail. A video of the actions was taken and posted to Facebook.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "Eating a live animal and posting a video of it online for entertainment is not some light-hearted joke. It is unacceptable.

"The RSPCA takes the use of animals in these NekNominate challenges very seriously."

According to the RSPA, Gateshead Magistrates' Court heard Hope was "ashamed" of what he did and claimed it had been an impulsive act which would not be repeated. He was fined £300 after admitting animal cruelty.

Paedophile's Images Of Abuse Victim To Be Erased

Dorset Police has said it will now delete the images of an abuse victim from a paedophiles' laptop after originally ruling that the move would be "unlawful".

The accused, who is in his 50s, was jailed in 2013 for nine years after admitting a string of sex offences, including assaulting a child under the age of 13.

Following the decision last week, which was met with criticism, the force has said upon legal advice that it has decided to remove the images, adding that it is "the right thing to do".
