Unite Welcomes Lord Myners Report
Unite the union has welcomed a report by Lord Myners to change the governance of the Co-operative Group, saying that it was currently the 'only game in town' that could deliver a future for the group and the workforce.
Earlier last month the union wrote to Co-op’s regional board members on behalf of its 1,200 members urging them to back reform warning that the status quo was unsustainable.
Commenting on the publication of the full report, Unite national officer, Adrian Jones said: "We broadly support the report. It is the only game in town at the moment that can deliver a future for the group and our members. The current situation is unsustainable and recent events should leave people in no doubt of the need for reform to secure jobs and the Co-op Group's future.
"Our members embrace the Co-op's unique ethos and have been working tirelessly to make the group a success, but they are increasingly feeling frustrated that their livelihoods are being overlooked in the internal power struggles over whether to reform the group.
"We'd urge Co-op members at the AGM on Saturday to give the group a fighting chance and support reform."

George Awarded Damages Over 'Obsession'
The man cleared of murdering TV presenter Jill Dando after spending seven years in jail has won damages over newspaper claims. Barry George brought the case over claims that he was obsessed with singer Cheryl Cole and newsreader Kay Burley. The claims were made in the Sunday Mirror, the People and on the Daily Mirror website in 2008.

West Lothian Cannabis 'Farm' Raided
Lothian and Borders Police have launched an investigating after a cannabis cultivation was discovered at a property in West Lothian. Officers carried out a search at an address in Ossian Drive, Livingston yesterday and discovered five separate growing areas within. Approximately 200 plants were recovered with and estimated value of £30,000.

ELO Cellist Killed In Hay Bale Accident
A former member of rock group Electric Light Orchestra was killed when a large hay bale crashed into his van while he was driving. Mike Edwards, who played cello with the Birmingham band between 1972 and 1975, died when the 600kg bale rolled onto the A381 in Halwell, Devon, around 12:30pm on Friday.

Youth Programme Pilot 'Did Not Reduce Teenage Pregnancies'
A government-backed pilot scheme to help cut pregnancies among teenagers at risk has been abandoned as it failed to have any significant impact. An independent review published today by the bmj.com was commissioned by the Department of Health to examine the £5.9m Young People’s Development Programme (YPDP).

Quicker access to emergency drugs could 'speed up' treatment
Patients could receive common medicines without a doctor's prescription so as to speed up treatment, under proposals outlined today. The government has announced the establishment of 18 new national Patient Group Directions (PGD) which, it is hoped, will promote "speedier care for patients needing emergency treatment".
